DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH The English Department of this college has a glorious past. The present is not just a shadow of the past but a continuation of the same. Since its inception in 1888, honours courses have been running regularly. History avers that even post graduation courses had run smoothly till 1905. Again, till date the alumni of this college are well placed here and abroad. The Department can boast of its multifaceted achievements over all these year. Present Departmental Strength :

Learning Resources of the dept.: Library: Apart from the central library there is a rich departmental library (popularly known as seminar library) consisting of 182 books exclusively for the Hons. Students. Recently department procures a few cassettes and CDs to supplement the reference books for the students. Computer: One computer with internet facilities is available. Other resources: Over head projectors and charts are the other learning resources of the department.
Participation of the teachers in academic and personal counseling of the students: The teachers frequently participate in both academic and personal counseling of the students. The students have free access to the teachers in order to solve any academic problem. Apart from remedial and tutorial classes whenever any student faces problem with academic pursuits he/she is called and given extra counseling. Even when a student is detected to be absent minded or fastened the teachers listen to his/ her personal problems and accordingly with out hampering his/her privacy.
Details of Faculty development programmes and teachers who have been benefited during the last two years: Sri Asit Biswas attended UGC sponsored seminar on Modernity and Creativity by this department jointly during September 2007 enriched the faculties from the seminar topic of resources person of different universities.
Research Apart from teaching Dr. Ketaki Dutta (HOD) is now guiding one Ph.D scholars and four M. Phil. Scholars.
Placement:
Almost 60% of the passed student is employed mainly in various High School through SSC. In addition to normal assignments of the faculties they take some extra classes for the students appearing in SSC, WBCS and to the qualified students for interview.
